Upper secondary education

Five profiles to choose from

The upper school leads from the introductory phase (Year 11) to the qualification phase (Years 12/13) and prepares students for the Abitur or (technical) university entrance qualification. Learners set individual priorities, take responsibility for their learning and develop their methods, subject knowledge and personality. There are five content profiles to choose from:

  • Language profile
  • Natural sciences profile
  • Social sciences profile
  • Music and arts profile
  • Sports profile

Contents

Year 11

introduction phase

Year 11 forms the bridge between lower secondary school and the qualification phase.

  • The focus is on new forms of learning, independent work and setting initial priorities.
  • In addition to the compulsory subjects, pupils can choose from sports theory, computer science, history (bilingual) or a third foreign language – ideal for exploring interests and preparing for later course choices.
  • A stay abroad is particularly recommended at this stage.

Year groups 12/13

qualification phase

In the Q phase, pupils choose profiles and take courses at an advanced or basic level.

  • In addition, there are seminar subjects and, where applicable, sports programmes. Performance is documented in thematic semester sections; the overall qualification is based on course performance in the Q phase and the Abitur examinations.
  • Support and prospects: Dedicated teachers provide targeted preparation for university, training and careers (including Münster University Day and career guidance programmes). Modern learning methods and digital equipment support the learning process.

Qualifications

General higher education entrance qualification (A-levels)

  • Proof of defined achievements in four half-years of the Q phase and in the Abitur examinations
  • Maximum duration: 4 school years (one permitted repeat in EF or return to Q phase, § 3 VO-GO)

Technical college entrance qualification

  • School part of the technical college entrance qualification: Proof of defined achievements in two consecutive half-years of the Q phase
  • Technical college entrance qualification (full): School part plus vocational part (e.g. completed vocational training, one-year internship, voluntary service)
