Finding your own path

At Georgianum Grammar School, we help our pupils find their own path to higher education and a career at an early stage. We support them in discovering and developing their personal interests and strengths so that they can gradually develop a career path that is right for them.

Our diverse range of career and study orientation services covers a total of more than 25 days over the course of their school career – with plenty of opportunity to gather information, try things out and find their bearings.

Future Day (Girls' Day, Boys' Day) – first personal experiences with the world of work

Pupils gain their first concrete ideas about professions and career fields by participating in Future Day. This takes place annually in March or April. On this day, pupils in Years 8 and 9 can explore different professions in order to learn about their career prospects. Future Day offers young people the opportunity to get a taste of working life and broaden their career choices. Parents or guardians are asked to support their children in finding suitable places to visit. On Future Day, pupils should learn about professions that are still "untypical" for them. On this day, they can also accompany their parents, relatives or acquaintances to their workplace. Young people can also contact companies they would like to learn more about themselves.

Curriculum vitae and application (specialist teaching in German)

Year 9 pupils explore the topic of career guidance in their German lessons, covering the following content:

  1. Creating a personal profile
  2. Making contact: cover letter and CV
  3. The job interview

Potential analysis I (specialist teaching in politics and economics)

At the end of Year 9, an initial skills assessment is carried out in the form of an assessment centre. The aim is to help pupils identify their particular interests and strengths as well as their potential for development.

Year 10

Job application training

In September, all Year 10 pupils will take part in a special three-hour seminar to prepare them for the application process. From the first contact with a company, through the application letter, to the interview and the assessment centre process, future applicants learn everything about the requirements they will face. This seminar is conducted in cooperation with the AOK under the direction of Ms Julia Janning.

BIB Emsland in Lingen

On the initiative of the district of Emsland, in cooperation with training companies, district craft associations, chambers, associations, schools and the Employment Agency, the BIB (career information exchange) Emsland takes place once a year – usually in October – in Lingen. The event usually features over 60 exhibitors (companies and other institutions) who inform school pupils about the wide range of training opportunities available in the region and aim to open up new career horizons for them. Year 10 pupils are prepared for the visit as part of their politics and economics lessons, during which they are informed in advance about the objectives of the event and plan for themselves which exhibitors they want to visit on the day of the career information fair.

Social internship 10

Our Year 10 pupils complete their first two-week work experience placement. This traditionally takes place in the first two full weeks after the half-year holidays (February). This internship is a social internship designed to teach students about the tasks involved in various occupational fields (retirement homes, kindergartens, Christophorus-Werk, hospitals, SKF, SKM, care facilities, etc.).

Year 11

"School meets business" (GROWTH project)

Digitalisation processes are increasingly shaping not only our private lives, but also school and vocational education. This makes it increasingly challenging to gain an overview of the broad field of digitalisation in various professions. To give school pupils an initial orientation, the Georgianum Grammar School, together with the Faculty of Management, Culture and Technology at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, the Lingen Employment Agency, the Lingen Economic Development Agency and the Emsland Economic Association, is offering four project days under the motto "School meets business – digitalisation live. Internship Day for School Students" (Project Growth), which focuses on visits to companies in Lingen and the surrounding region. The project days will take place in September for the entire 11th grade.

Work experience placement 11

The two-week work experience placement in Year 11 is intended to provide a concrete insight into the world of work and economic relationships at company level, thus also establishing a link to the Politics and Economics lessons in Year 11, in which the topic of careers and the world of work is central. With this in mind, students also work on a key topic that must relate to topics covered in politics and economics lessons. As this work replaces the class test in the second half of Year 11, the requirements (academic work) are also higher. The internship therefore focuses on examining economic structures and processes. In addition, the internship naturally also serves to further personal career orientation. In contrast to the internship in Year 10, the focus of the work experience in Year 11 is not on the social sector (e.g. care and nursing). Rather, the aim is to give students an insight into traditional businesses or relevant public service institutions. The work experience placement in Year 11 takes place at the same time as the social work experience placement in the first two full weeks after the half-year holidays (February).

Parents' evening on career guidance (BA)

As part of the introduction to the upper school qualification phase (years 12 and 13), an information evening for parents and pupils is held at the beginning of the second half of year 11. In addition to key information about the sixth form, which will be provided by the sixth form coordinator Mr. Hoffmann, Ms. Schäfer from the Federal Employment Agency (BA) will also give a presentation on the importance of course selection for career orientation, factors influencing career choice and the role of parents in this regard, as well as the organisation of career orientation in years 12 and 13.

Potential analysis II (BA)

Since interests can change and personalities can develop during school, a new potential analysis (competence assessment procedure in the form of an assessment centre) should be carried out in secondary level II. This currently takes place in Year 11 through a cooperation with the Federal Employment Agency (Ms Schäfer from the Lingen Employment Agency) (end of August/beginning of September). Alternatively, the potential analysis could also be carried out in politics and economics lessons.

Central events on career guidance (BA) in Years 12 and 13

For all Year 12 and Year 13 pupils, Ms Schäfer from the Employment Agency (BA) will be holding career guidance sessions on two separate dates in January or February. In a double lesson, pupils will receive information on further career and study orientation, with the focus more on studying.

Individual career and study guidance (BA)

On the first parents' evening in November, Ms Sabine Schäfer from the Employment Agency offers career counselling for pupils in years 10 to 13 and their parents.

Twice a month, Ms Sabine Schäfer from the Employment Agency will be at the school to offer individual career and study guidance. Individual meetings will provide an opportunity to research areas of focus and fields of work for the respective pupils. On each day, there will be six individual meetings for pupils in years 10 to 13. Participation is only possible after prior consultation with Mr Reschke.

University Day in Münster

The Münster University Day is traditionally attended by the entire Year 12 cohort and usually takes place in November. On University Day, pupils can expect a wide range of events organised by the participating universities, including their faculties and departments as well as their cooperation partners. Pupils can take part in regular lectures and seminars, guided tours and visits, and special information presentations. In addition, the universities offer general study advice. Subject-specific advice is also available for almost all subjects.

Study information day at the Lingen campus

Every year in May, Year 12 attends the Study Information Day at the Lingen Campus (Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences). Professors, staff and students present their degree programmes. In addition, mini-lectures and workshops provide a deeper insight into the subjects. Students guide interested visitors around the campus and the library, report on their experiences during their studies and present their student projects. On the study information day, the university also provides an insight into the practical work involved in the degree programme in the various laboratories and studios.

Vocatium Lingen (Ems) – Trade fair

In the second half of the year, Year 12 pupils have the opportunity to take time off school in May to attend vocatium Lingen (Ems). This is a trade fair for training and study that brings companies, technical colleges, universities, academies and institutions into personal dialogue with young people. On the one hand, the vocatium fair in Lingen (Ems) offers young people intensive support with career orientation. On the other hand, it is one of the most successful recruiting tools for education providers and training companies. The unique selling point of vocatium Lingen (Ems) is the scheduled meetings between students and exhibitors and the comprehensive preparation for these meetings.

"Week of Justice"

In 2024, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice proclaimed the first ever "Week of Justice". The 75th anniversary of the Basic Law was thus taken as an opportunity to bring the value of the constitutional state back into the public eye. The campaign week took place throughout Lower Saxony in September, with the participation of numerous courts, public prosecutors' offices, prisons and other actors involved in the justice system. The aim was and is to present the topic of justice in its entirety and to give people throughout Lower Saxony direct access to the justice system. Within this framework, the Georgianum grammar school also entered into a cooperation with the Lingen prison and the Lingen district court for the first time, which will be continued annually in future due to its great success. The cooperation includes visits by upper school classes studying politics and economics to the Lingen District Court and Lingen Prison. The cooperation gives the pupils a concrete insight into the relevant professional fields. Justice Week takes place in September, with 30 pupils from Year 12 able to take part.

Marketing strategies in the application process (VME)

For students who are interested in engineering careers, Mr Steffen Vogt from the VME Foundation, our cooperation partner (Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry), conducts application training entitled "Marketing Strategies in the Application Process" in Year 13. Unfortunately, places on this seminar, which takes place annually in autumn, are limited to 15 people. In the afternoon, participants visit a metalworking company (e.g. EMCO, Kampmann, Rosen) to talk to engineers about study and career requirements as well as areas of responsibility within the company.

Student academy

Up to 10 particularly gifted and interested Year 12 pupils have the opportunity to participate in the Student Academy of the Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim grammar schools. This usually takes place at the Ludwig Windthorst House in Lingen (Ems) and lasts for one week. In addition to subject-specific seminars, events are offered that provide an introduction to or in-depth knowledge of general communication techniques and presentation formats. During this week, excursions to companies and speed dating with HR managers from participating companies are also organised. The exchange with students from other secondary schools in the region further enriches the programme.
